The History of MM2H

The Malaysia My Second Home Program (MM2H) began as the Silver Hair Program in 1989 — originally a retirement scheme allowing foreign retirees to live in Malaysia. The program evolved and was renamed Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) in 2002, a name it still carries today.

Over more than 37 years, the criteria have changed several times to reflect current conditions and needs. You may hear people online complain about these frequent changes, but the programme itself has remained stable and continues operating after nearly four decades. Applicants approved in earlier years continue to enjoy the original criteria that applied when they first qualified — many foreigners have gone on to make Malaysia their first home.

2000s Criteria

Savings of at least MYR 300,000 in a local bank, with up to MYR 240,000 withdrawable after 1 year (minimum balance MYR 60,000)

Age 50+ (2000s)

Reduced Fixed Deposit of MYR 150,000, with up to MYR 90,000 withdrawable (minimum balance MYR 60,000)
